From Trash to Treasure - DIY Scrapbook Paper Jewelry tray: Fashionista

I’m so excited to share my new creation . . . a fun tray to store jewelry or makeup! In case you couldn’t tell, I love doing craft stuff, especially creating something fun out of trashy objects!

I had this scrap piece of cardboard (I think it came along with the side tables we bought a year back, maybe?) and thought it would make an amazing tray to store my jewelry or makeup! 🙂 It would make a great display in a closet, or even on a dressing table. Use a different style of paper to use it in another corner of the house!

I am infatuated with Mod Podge right now. It is so versatile! (No, this is not a sponsored post, in case you were wondering!)  I. AM. OBSESSED. It seems to stick on anything!

I had this pack of Fashionista themed scrapbook paper I got at Lincraft (or Spotlight?) and knew it would fit this project perfectly. I went with a fun print of the shoes. Who doesn't love shoes, and you can never have too many shoes, right?! I chose some fun colors to go with the fashionista paper. I wanted a wooden look for the edge, so chose a muted wood scrapbook paper for that, and went with a bright pink one for the bottom of the tray.

So with these ideas in hand, let’s start this makeover!

For this project, you’ll need this stuff:

Supplies

• Good old thick cardboard tray (Packaging cartons are the best if you would like to make one! Simply take measurements, cut pieces of cardboard, and join with a hot glue gun. Or you could use a wooden tray for this makeover if you own one.)
• Glue
• Mod Podge 
• Lace
• Scrapbook paper
• Sponge brush 
• Scissors & ruler / Paper trimmer
• Hot glue gun
• Sequins (optional)

Getting Started

Step 1 - Reinforce joints and edges 

Since I already had the cardboard tray, all I had to do was reinforce the joints! I trimmed any extras, glued the sides and any open ends.

Step 2 – Measure and cut your scrapbook paper

Now let’s prepare our paper! For a perfect fit, measure out the bottom of your serving tray. Then cut your scrapbook paper to fit. But of course, I went with a rough estimate instead. I placed the papers on the tray and made an approximate idea.

Step 3 – Mod Podge your paper to your tray

I covered the joints first, then the edges with the wooden scrapbook paper. For great adhesion, cover the base with Mod Podge and then place the paper. Smooth out the paper and bubbles as you go. 

Once the wooden sides were ready, I went ahead with the base of the tray. Place your large pieces of scrapbook papers covering the entire top of the tray. 

I also Mod Podged on top of the papers to give them a nice sheen and finish. 

Then, I went ahead and finished the back of the tray. 

Step 4 - Glitz and glam! 

We are almost done! Since we are only using them for storage, I added some glamour by sprinkling some star shaped sequins in the wet glue. Who doesn't love some sparkle? 🙂

Of course, I couldn't stop with the bling, so I found this fun lace in my stash and added that to the inside edge of the tray as well.

It gave a better finish (also covering some problem areas). With that said, we are done!

Step 5 – Finishing touches

If you want to add some handles you could (you could use big beads, or even door knobs), but I didn't want to, since I wanted to use every inch of the tray! So, with our fashionista tray complete, let’s decorate.

You can put pretty much anything you want on it. I wanted to use it for storing my jewelry, and some makeup which I was using the most, so I went with that! But the choice is yours! I might even keep changing the contents of the tray from time to time!
